LDRS 25 was held in Amarillo, TX on June 29th – July 4th. This was my first LDRS and since it was close we decided to go. The first 4 days are for commercial rockets and the last two days are for Ex or research. There where several people from Colorado at the launch but we drove down with Steve and Chris Frazier. They pulled their fifth wheel trailer and I took my RV. Other than a little wind and the loss of my plastic cover to my roof mounted AC unit, the trip was uneventful. We arrived on Wednesday night around 6:00pm and setup camp.
The next day I got out early to catch some of the bigger rockets going off early while the wind was calm. There was not many people there yet and most did not show up till late Friday night and Saturday morning. So we talked with a lot of people, took some pictures and got some video and as always with Chris we talked some trash too. The weather was hot and it was windy most of the time. Also there was a lot of dust being kicked up by people driving around. Typical big rocket launch.
Throughout the remainder of the week both Don and I worked on and prepped rockets for Monday the first research day. While our neighbors gave us a hard time. I had brought 6 motors to fly. Two 54mm full K motors and four full I motors. Doug G showed some of his high speed videos a couple of night for the people who stayed out and camped. There was also a night launch and a small air show Saturday morning with raffle tickets for helicopter rides in the afternoon. Pat G and POTROCS can put on a great launch.
I loaded up Johnny Bravo with a K1400 for the first flight. The boost was great and the rocket landed not too far from the pads. The next flight was on Sky Ruler with an I 500. This was my first test using Brad's mini altimeter. Just in case I did use a bigger drogue chute. Turn out I needed that bigger drogue as the main never fired. The rocket landed a little hard and broke away the electronics mounting board, but the rest of the rocket survived with out any other damage. We tested the altimeter several times and it has worked fine since then. I didn't want to fix the board on the spot so I put away Sky Ruler to fix when I got back home.
Since Johnny Bravo was still in good condition, I loaded up a K1300 Skyblue motor. Again another great boost and even closer landing. I had three for three great motor burns. The rest of the day I helped Don with his rocket. As usual he almost didn't fly, but we worked through the issues and got him loaded up. He flew a RDS North Star rocket with one of Ken's AN l670 motors, and what great boost that was . Don also got some good video coverage using a camera inside the rocket.
After we got Don's rocket back ,we packed up and got ready to leave. I was ready to get home as well as Don so we took off about 4:30 pm.
LDRS 25 had many people fly from very young to very old with the smallest Estes rockets to some of the biggest. Thanks to POTROCS for hosting LDRS and all the people we meet and got to know a bit better. Take a look at some of the pictures we got from LDRS. I have also included over 50 videos we got at LDRS 25.
