MB Rocketry - Projects - Tall Daddy- Part 3

I wanted to glass the body tubes to make them stronger using the anti-zipper design. I started off with 6.0 oz weave glass with a double wrap. The stock LOC coupler was very weak so I decided to glass the inside of the tube coupler to make it stronger as well. It got a double wrap of 6 oz glass as well.

I measured and cut the fiberglass to do a double wrap with about a two inch overlap for both tubes. I then got ready to apply the epoxy. I made sure a had wax paper under my project, a balloon and plastic bag for the tube coupler and latex gloves in place. I started off by roughing up the body tube to soak up the epoxy better. I used 80 grit sand paper and scuffed the surface. I drew a straight reference line down the tube to help line up the glass. I then mixed up the epoxy and applied to the body tube. Using the line for a reference, I applied the glass to the body tube. Slowing working the glass onto the body tube from the middle out. Once that was done, I let it setup and cure.

After the fiberglass was dry, I marked the BT for the fin slots at every 4.225 inches around the outside. Then I setup my routing table and installed the 1/2-inch bit. Using a alligator clip in the glide track to use as a guide to keep the slots straight. I then cut all three fin slots. Taking my time moving the tube along the table. It talks about 5 minutes for each slot. They turned out very nice. I need to clean the paper flashing from the edges and clean them up. Very nice.

For the nose cone, I was able to drill out a small hole for 1/4 eye bolt. I drilled the hole small so it would thread into the plastic. Then I mixed up some 15 min epoxy and put some in the hole, then threaded the eye bolt in. I then put the rest of the epoxy on the outside. It also came out nice.
